And exes are dangerous territory for a reason - it's already established that there was something there once, that there was physical attraction and obviously commonalities. They shouldn't be anywhere near her. And that's what it really comes down to: is having the friend or ex in your life going to create a relationship that's more like a triangle or not? Sure, some may say, "I don't have to put up with her in the same way as I did in a relationship." But I also think that their shared history and friendship can blot out whatever went wrong the first time around, and that's just not fair to the present girl. A friend, and definitely an ex, should not have equal footing to your significant other.

In any case, both sides should be sensible enough not to allow a fling to drag for too long (I say less than 6 mos is ideal). I personally think that fling dating is just fine as long as the expectations are made blatantly clear upfront. Then if something more serious begins to develop, said expectations could and should be re-evaluated.
