The other thing that's interesting is you believe that the fact he buys you expensive dinners and took you on a whale cruise (I think you mentiond he paid for that?) means he loves you. If he was really so keen to have you on that trip, he'd have paid for the family trip not risking you wouldn't go, but not paid for the cruise. You paid your own way because he didn't much care if he went or not; maybe he was producing you for his mother's benefit since she loves you so much.

I think, sorry, that it was a little selfish of you not to think about this before you got into a relationship with him. You can hear the resentment already between the lines of your original post. If someone's background is extremely faith-based and you don't agree with that thought process or lifestyle, and you know that up front, why put yourself and him in a situation where it will need to be addressed and sorted out? Also to feel that way about his family and what he believes is just going to cause problem after problem. You should have done the right thing and remained his true friend. Sorry that is not a great reason. At some point, I think you will transfer that resentment to him as a person. Your values are at extreme odds. Anyhow, good luck unraveling this.
